Hasna el Becharia

Born 1951 in Béchar, as pointed out by her name,

Hasna el Becharia is a female Gnawa multi-instrumentalist.
Béchar in southwestern Algeria is a fertile musical ground, with styles such as Diwan,
Foundou and the popular Haddawi repertoire to celebrate Arab-Berber weddings of this sub-region.
With a powerful and rough gumbri sound and an astonishing sense of rhythm,
Hasna recalls the music of the ancient soudanis who spoke Hejmi,
the language used today in the Diwâns,(Diwân: collection of poems or assembly), a Songhaï mixing Haoussa and Fulani.

Like numerous Algerian Gnawa musicians, Hasna takes her roots in the popular wedding repertoire.
In addition to gumbri , she plays electric guitar, ud, darbuka, bendir and even banjo. In her head are dancing,
therapeutic Gnawi tunes (she impressed the audience of the Essaouira Festival),
Moroccan laments in which love is not necessarily eternal and a revival of the Lemchaheb’s repertoire
(a famous band in Casablanca, like Nass el Ghiwane in the 70’s) as well as songs by Cheikh Zouzou, the Oranese,
who used to make his violin cry and was adulated in the 30’s by a Muslim as well as a Jewish audience.
Her talent as instrumentalist is obvious, but she never thought of recording any cassette. In 1972, she began to play by herself. With three friends of hers, including Zorah and Kheira who are still singing by her
side, singing and playing drums and tambourines. Hasna played traditional desert tunes on the acoustic guitar.
They became successful very quickly, playing at weddings, banquets, etc.At the age of 50, Hasna recorded in France
